What Do You Think?

England’s latest football Messiah has returned with what appears to be a miraculously healed metatarsel. Capitalising on this second coming a certain sportwear manufacturer has captured the headlines with this image:Kwr1334337_2

The image has appeared in newspapers and on a 20mx30m billboard alongside the M4.

OK, I see the cross of St George. Ok, I know that Rooney has a characteristic way of celebrating a goal. But am I the only one to find this image disturbing?

What do you think?

It’s True Then?

Picked this up on the BBC website:

“Spanish daily 20 Minutos claims Nostradamus tipped Spain to win the World Cup. It quotes one of his prophecies as follows: “In the sixth month of 2006 the King of Spain will cross the Pyrenees with his troops. The legions of Beelzebub will battle him in central Europe and suffer doom and destruction. The Holy Grail will then come to Spain.”

Didn’t I tell you England would get to the final???

Overconfidence II

Mars have apparently renamed their iconic bars Da_1_bjpgBelieve during the World Cup. The purpose I guess is to galvanise home support for the lads. As you can imagine, the Scots haven’t taken too kindly to it. Edinburgh-based design company have cashed in on a tee-shirt, the first batch of which have already sold out, which says ‘Believe? Ma arse!’

It is reported that sales of Mars have plunged catastrophically north of the border but shop keepers are unable to get batches without the new name.

Overconfidence

It all starts today…a whole month’s worth of father’s days. The only downside is incessant English hype about their chances.

But how about this for overconfidence. Apparently, in a poll of 1,600 people in Russia, 10% make Brazil the favourites (no surprise), and 6% make Russia favourites to walk off with the trophy next month.

Only problem….Russia didn’t qualify.

Come on Ireland!

Men and their Football

Posted in Football on March 28, 2006 by crookedshore

Well now it’s official…men can be faithful too. Read a piece of research in yesterday’s newspaper about men and their football teams. It seems that 94% of 2000 men surveyed say they would never abandon their team no matter how dire they played, but 52% of those same men say they would walk from a relationship that hit the rocks. Now I don’t want to condone that, or at least my wife wouldn’t want me to condone it, but this team loyalty thing is something women struggle to understand.

Just tonight, as I cheered a brilliant Arsenal performance against Juve, my wife said I would be better off supporting them than Leeds, the team I’ve supported since I was six, when someone told me they were better than Crystal Palace who I’d supported for about 10 mins (so that doesn’t count). Anyway I was only six. Didn’t know any better. (Crystal Palace for goodness sake!)

Anyway, the psychologist who conducted the research was quoted as saying “In an age where jobs and relationships come and go, loyalty is now reserved for something men feel they can believe in – football.”

BTW, 30% of the men said football had been instrumental in helping them bond with other men. 40% of them also said they had spilled tears of joy and despair, and 25% said they would miss a family funeral to watch a match.

Makes you proud doesn’t it?
